Jun 22, · Trout fishing on Michigan’s pristine Au Sable River. For many anglers, the Au Sable is the lodestone trout fishing destination.
The last couple days have been pretty bitter cold and would have been tough fishing. Forecast is for warmer near end of the week and weekend. Currently water levels have come down the last couple days due to the operations at Foote Dam and the cold weather. So many nice deep slow runs and sand holes in lower Au Sable River that are just ideal for holding steelhead this time of year.
Currently there are some very nice Steelhead and Atlantic Salmon in the river. Most of the Atlantics are done spawning now and should stay in river for a while and feed. Look to the structure for Atlantics — around logs and they love shallow water. These fish can be very aggressive and fishing them with streamers has been effective. The bite window can really turn off and on during the course of a day! At times you can sight fish them and they will just pounce on a streamer with one cast but also many will just chase to the boat!
Steelhead numbers continue to increase and there are some nice adult ones in the river now. Either swung streamers or egg patterns are what is producing for them right now.

This fish is probably the most economically valuable species in Canada’s inland waters. Walleye is a major commercial and sport fish in Ontario and the Prairie Provinces, and a major sport fish in Quebec. An angler survey in Ontario showed that the walleye was the game species most often fished and was the second in abundance in anglers’ catches. The perch family is a large one, with about species in North America alone. The walleye Stizostedion vitreum is a close relative of the yellow perch, sauger and the darters.
Walleye are known by many common names such as pickerel, yellow pickerel, yellow walleye, pike perch, wall-eyed pike, walleye pike and core. Walleye has a dark green back, golden yellow sides and a white belly. The lower tip of the caudal fin is white, and there is a large black blotch at the rear base of the first dorsal fin. Young walleye usually have dark blotches across their backs and down their sides, patterns that usually are absent in the adults.
The colour of the walleye is highly variable, depending on habitat, with golden colour characteristics in many populations. Usually Walleye are paler with less obvious black markings in turbid waters and more strikingly marked in clear waters.
The story behind Jake Fromm’s fishing accident
Going out today I decided to try a spot where heavy southerly winds often push fish into this area. One hour into our first pass though and I was doubting my decision, but eventually the fish started to turn on there better and by the end of that pass, we had 16 walleyes in the cooler. We shortened up the second pass through the most productive area and caught 10 more. At that point things were looking pretty good, but after that though the bite slowed down considerably as it took us nearly the full eight hour charter to finish off my clients 32 walleye limit.

Our day started out very chilly with a stiff, westerly wind that was nearly twice as stiff as predicted by the marine forecast. Instead of the predicted one foot waves we had three footers for much of the day until the wind finally let up after noon. The bite started off fairly decent, but it was a light bite and we probably lost half our fish today as a result. The wind was fickle too, switching back and forth some and every time the wind shifted, the bite would slow down for a while.
My clients from Brighton, MI and Cadillac, MI kept at it though and close to the end of the eight hour charter, they put the final fish in the box hitting their limits of eight walleyes per person. We caught fish of many different sizes today with the biggest walleyes being about 23 inches. We also caught some nice catfish too. We fished 5 to 6 miles from the Au Gres River mouth in waters ranging from 13 to 24 feet deep covering different water on every trolling pass looking for a hot spot with bigger fish.
The walleyes seemed to be scattered all over though.
